Power from your balcony: what changes for people who live in flats
Until now, if you lived in a flat without your own roof, you had no practical way to generate your own power. That is changing. On 14 September 2026 the Ministry of Environment and Energy announced the new self-consumption framework, which allows small balcony solar systems of up to 800 W.
Such a system is simple: two panels on the balcony railing or wall and a small inverter that feeds the energy into your home's circuit. The fridge, the router, devices on standby and anything else running during the day use the solar energy first. With a small battery, such as the GoodWe ESA Athena, the midday surplus is kept for the evening.
On a south-facing balcony, two panels generate about 900–1,100 kWh a year. That means about 96 € less on your bill without a battery and about 144 € less with one, at an electricity price of 0.16 €/kWh.
The process to permit their use is under way. Until then, we are taking registrations of interest. As soon as it opens, we will call those who registered first, to check their balcony and make a proposal.
