Balcony solar

Two panels on your balcony railing or wall, a small inverter and, if you like, a battery. Power for a flat with no roof of its own. The new self-consumption framework allows systems of up to 800 W.

The road to the first installations

On 14 September 2026 the Ministry of Environment and Energy announced the new framework for generating energy for your own use, which includes balcony solar of up to 800 W. The process to permit their use is under way.

How it works

A small system with an immediate benefit

The energy is used the moment it's generated, by whatever is running in your home.

Every home has a “base load” that runs all day: the fridge, the router, appliances on standby, the circulation pump. It's usually 100 to 250 W. A balcony system covers this load during sunny hours, and a bit more when the washing machine or air conditioning is on.

Without a battery, anything not used at that moment goes to the grid. With a small battery, the day's surplus is kept for the evening and self-consumption rises significantly.

The panels send direct current to a small inverter, which converts it to alternating current and feeds it into your home's circuit. The appliances running at that moment use it first.
A day in a flat

When it generates, when you use power

At midday the system generates up to 600–700 W, while a flat usually uses 150–350 W. In the evening it's the other way round. That's why a battery makes such a big difference.

Mounting & orientation

What affects the output

Two things matter most: which way the balcony faces and at what tilt the panels are mounted. Shade from nearby buildings, awnings or trees also reduces the output.

Is it for me?

A quick check

It suits you if…

  • you live in a flat without your own roof
  • your balcony faces south, east or west
  • you have appliances that run during the day
  • you want something simple that moves house with you
  • you want backup for essential loads in a power cut (with a battery)

It probably doesn't suit you if…

  • your balcony faces north or is shaded all day
  • you have a house with a roof: a standard solar system delivers far more
  • you already have solar on the same supply
  • your building's rules don't allow changes to its appearance

How we work

From the form to the app on your phone

  1. Register your interest

You fill in the form. There's no obligation.

  2. Balcony check

You send us photos or we visit: orientation, railing, shading, socket.

  3. Proposal

Number of panels, mounting, with or without a battery, and an estimate of the benefit.

  4. Installation

Mounting, connection and testing by an electrician, in a few hours.

  5. App

You see on your phone how much energy you generate and how much you save.

Safety

A small system, properly installed

  • The inverter stops feeding power into the circuit as soon as the grid goes down, so no one working on the line is at risk.
  • We fix the panels with railing or wall mounts rated for wind.
  • We check the circuit and the socket used for the connection.
  • The ESA Athena battery is TÜV Rheinland certified and has a built-in fire suppression system.
FAQ

What people ask us most

Do I need permission from my building?

Your balcony is for your own use, but the system affects how the building looks. We check the building's rules and the mounting, and tell you what's needed.

Can I fit it if I rent?

Usually yes, with the landlord's consent. Because nothing is altered permanently, the system comes with you when you leave.

Can I fit it if I already have solar on the roof?

It usually makes no sense on the same supply and may not be allowed. We'll check it against the terms of the new framework.

What if my balcony doesn't face south?

East and west give about 20% less energy, north about half. We'll tell you during the check whether it's worthwhile.

Am I paid for the energy that goes to the grid?

The framework will decide that. That's why our calculation counts nothing for the energy that goes out, and a battery helps you keep it.

Will I have power during a power cut?

Not without a battery, for safety reasons. With ESA Athena, essential loads connected to its backup output keep running, up to 1,500 W.

Does it simply plug into a socket?

Exactly how it connects will be set by the approval. We'll make sure an electrician connects it correctly and safely.
