What it is
A balcony solar system is a small self-consumption system: one to three panels on the railing, on the wall or on a floor stand on the balcony, plus a small inverter that feeds the energy into your home's circuit. It can also include a small battery.
What the new framework says
On 14 September 2026 the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy (ΥΠΕΝ) announced the new framework for generating energy for own use, which includes balcony systems of up to 800 W. The process to allow their use is under way. Technical details, such as how they are connected, will be set out with the approval.

How much it produces
It depends mainly on orientation and tilt. Two 450 W panels on a south-facing railing produce about 900–1,100 kWh a year in Attica. East or west gives about 20% less, north about half the energy.
How much you save
The energy is worth most when you use it at the moment it is produced. Without a battery a flat makes use of about 60% of the output, which is roughly €96 a year. With a 1.92 kWh battery this rises to about 90%, roughly €144.
With or without a battery?
- Without a battery: simpler and cheaper, ideal if someone is at home during the day.
- With a battery: a significantly bigger benefit if the home is empty during the day, plus backup for essential loads during a power cut.
- The ESA Athena battery starts at 1.92 kWh and can be expanded up to 9.6 kWh.
What to check beforehand
- Your building's rules on changes to the façade.
- That the railing or wall can bear the mounting.
- Shading from awnings, trees and neighbouring buildings.
- Whether there is already a solar system on the same electricity supply.
